We love linen. And because we do, we use only the finest flax sourced from Normandy, France. Normandy is renowned for its flax cultivation and yarn production, and is home to local farmers who have, for generations, been honing their craft. There, flax grows in glorious sunshine and nourishing rainfall. Why is this important? Because optimal weather conditions are vital to growing and producing high-quality flax yarn. Which is why we use their flax, and why, with us, you’re guaranteed quality linen fabrics.

Our linen bedding is also exceptionally soft. Linen fibre is naturally quite rough, and while there are various ways by which you can soften the fabric, we use a technique called pumice stone wash – for the most comfortable feel. Stone washing increases the softness and flexibility of the fabric, giving you linen bedding that feels fabulous and looks relaxed.

We also believe in sustainability and being eco-conscious. That’s why our printed linens are made using pigment printing – a process that doesn’t involve steaming or washing and has a comparatively low environmental impact. Printed linens use inks that are OEKO-TEX® certified. This means they contain no harmful substances and comply with eco-friendly standards.

What are the benefits of our linen bedding?

Did you know that linen is considered to be one of the oldest fabrics used by humans? It was a symbol of purity and luxury, and was valued highly for its many benefits including:

• It’s hypoallergenic and antibacterial.
• It’s simple to clean. Flax naturally repels dirt, which allows it to stay clean longer than bedding made from cotton fabric. It’s easy to wash too – all of our linen bedding can be washed in the washing machine. What’s more, because our bedding is made from 100% natural linen, it feels softer and looks better with every wash.
• It’s perfect for hot summers since it’s cool and breathable. It’s also ideal for cold winters since flax fibres are hollow and trap air to keep you warm and cosy.
• It can absorb up to 20% of its weight in water, and so stays dry and comfortable for hot sleepers.
• It gives your bedroom an elegantly relaxed look. And you can tastefully crease the linen to give it and your bedroom a bit of texture.

How do we make our beautiful linen?

The manufacturing process for linen is far more complicated than cotton, and much more labour intensive – which explains the price difference. Here’s a short version of how we make our bed linen.

1. First, seeds must be sown. The best quality flax grows from seeds sown during cool and cloudy weather.
2. After 100 days, the flax is ready to be harvested – if the weather has been favourable. In order to get the longest fibres possible, harvesting must be done by hand so the roots can be pulled up as well. Long flax fibres guarantee the best quality of fabric.
3. Flax stalks are tied by hand into bundles and left to dry in warm, sunny areas for several weeks.
4. After the stalks have dried, the dried seed pods are crushed and the seeds are extracted. They can be used for the next crop.
5. Flax fibre for the yarn is collected from the inner bark of the stalk. This is tricky, as flax fibres are bound to the stalk. The process by which fibres are separated from stalks is known as “retting", and involves allowing microorganisms to break down the bonds between the fibres and the stalks. This may be done by water retting, where stalks are immersed in water, such as in a slow-moving river, and the microorganisms in the water break down the bonds. This takes several weeks, and the quality of the final product very much depends on the retting process.
6. After retting, the stalks are once again dried and then stored for a few weeks to a few months. Once fully dried, the stalks are passed between rollers that crush any remaining woody stalks.
7. Now the fibre can be fully separated from the stalks. This is done by hand using a wooden knife, and is called “scutching".
8. To separate shorter fibres from longer ones, the fibres are passed through a series of combs. This is known as the “hackling" process. Only long fibres are spun into linen fabric, thereby ensuring its high-quality.
9. Finally, the linen yarn is ready to be spun. After spinning the yarn, the fabric can be woven, bleached, or dyed (though the latter two are skipped if the fabric comes in linen’s natural and lovely colour).
